with years in the Pacific Northwest's interdependent arts communities, we've come to know our friend Gillian Frances as a guitarist, a bassist, a violinist, a songwriter, and a collaborator within bands like Black Belt Eagle Scout, Beverly, and This Is The Kit. in listening to Gillian's own self-released albums, her approach to songwriting is often reminiscent of the patient whispers of introspection from beloved artists like Tara Jane O'Neil, or at other times recalling the meditative qualities of her cousin and fellow musician within our archive, Alexia Avina.
'Pools, A Collection' is something else entirely as the EP marks the first collection of music written, recorded, and produced (almost) entirely by Gillian herself. Within these pieces we find worlds of pooled reflections, gazing upon guitar loops, and circling rumination transforming into synthesized crescendos aimed directly at the spirit. recorded during her move from the PNW to Los Angeles, while embracing the unknown and beginning a Masters in Traditional Chinese Medicine, Pools is a collection that explores a new aspect of Gillian's musical expression as a means to document personal upheavals and self-determinations.
In Gillian's own words, "I learned a lot and had a lot of fun working on this EP. Making and listening to ambient music feels like a deep massage to my nervous system. I feel free in making ambient or experimental music to express exactly how I am feeling, to reach into my body and draw my inner self out without judgement or self-criticism. What this collection represents to me is a withdraw from standards, a sitting with self, a gazing inward. A facing of deep truths that were often too scary to express with words, but easier to express with sound, layer or tone. In this collection I explore my inner experiences with heartbreak, chaos, transformation and personal freedom." To bear witness to one's personal transformations and expansions is one of the great gifts of art, and in being present within our local arts communities we take on a divine and voluntary responsibility of listening.
Sharing time listening to Pools, A Collection has been an act of seeing, of understanding, and in doing so, recontextualizing. We hope that you'll join us in putting on your headphones, finding a collection of water to be alongside, and wondering what memories are reflected within.
