about

sufi teacher and musician hazrat inayat khan once noted that “tone continues, time expires” to express the omnipresence of sound as a sign of life. the more our inner sense is open, the more capable we become of hearing the voice of all things.

summons is an exploration among the boundaries of our perception, the invocation of trance states, and the transportive nature of durational music. a verdant space offered as a field of experience. to echo a closer listen, “it will hopefully change and challenge your perception, but only if you listen to it at full volume, allowing you to see it completely.”

i've long appreciated that zachary's music presents itself like a prayer, a revelation, a return to source. watching him perform is more communion than concert, as despite his virtuosity with violin his greatest instrument is a profound vulnerability that allows room for collective transcendence. our creative work is often viewed as a mirror into the interiority of the artist, but summons poses the question of what appears in this mirror when the artist has given their personal autonomy to the channeling of divine creative transmission. can one’s hands claim composition when, in the invocation of a work, the artist becomes a translator between energy and space?

as zachary has become a student of tarot, alongside the qabalistic tree of life, both the album art and titles of these movements allude to cycles of time, illusions of everyday life, common source(s) of all existence, and our common fate. summons thus honors a subliminal relationship with music; rather than a collection actively composed, this conception and development of loops is a transmission, observing and making audible a fragment of the voices within a much grander symphony of life.

~

recorded in 2019, summons is zachary’s final transmission from los angeles. shortly after, amidst the dawning of the pandemic, he and his partner packed their car and moved to new york city. his prolific collaborations and performances will be missed greatly on the west coast, and in these tones we see the emanation of pastel skies, rolling mountains, and the golden gleam of the pacific ocean. we feel the dry heat of the high desert, where zachary co-organized the celebrated community run festival perpetual dune. and we know that in what comes next, whether solo, collaborative, or as part of nadoyel, zachary’s symphony has only just begun.
